If your foundation looks perfect when you apply it but gradually becomes darker or more orange throughout the day, you’re experiencing foundation oxidation.
It’s a common issue — and understanding why it happens makes it much easier to prevent.
What is foundation oxidation?
Foundation oxidation occurs when the formula reacts with elements on the skin or in the environment, causing the colour to shift after application.
This is why a shade that initially matches your skin can look noticeably different later in the day.
Why foundation oxidises
1. Natural oils in the skin
Sebum (your skin’s natural oil) can react with pigments in foundation, especially in liquid formulas, causing the colour to deepen or change tone.
2. Skin pH
Everyone’s skin has a slightly different pH level. This can affect how a foundation sits and how the pigments develop over time.
3. Formula type
Heavier, oil-based or synthetic formulations are more prone to oxidation, as they interact more with the skin’s natural oils.
4. Layering products
Using multiple skincare or makeup products underneath can affect how foundation wears — especially if products haven’t fully absorbed.
How to prevent foundation oxidation
1. Prepare the skin properly
- Cleanse thoroughly (not overly harsh)
- Use a suitable moisturiser
- Allow products to fully absorb before applying makeup
2. Use less product
Applying too much foundation can increase the likelihood of oxidation. A lighter, buildable layer performs better.
3. Choose breathable formulas
Mineral-based foundations tend to sit more lightly on the skin and are less reactive, helping maintain a more stable colour throughout the day.
4. Control excess oil
If you have oilier skin:
- apply a light finishing powder
- focus on areas prone to shine
This helps reduce the interaction between oil and pigment.
5. Allow foundation to settle before judging the shade
Always give foundation a few minutes after application to settle before deciding if the colour is right.
A more consistent finish
Foundation shouldn’t feel unpredictable.
By understanding how your skin interacts with your products, you can achieve a more consistent, natural finish that lasts throughout the day — without unwanted colour changes.
